Consul General Zheng Xiyuan Attends Joint Council of Chinese Organisations Northwest for Spring Festival Celebrations

On 10th February 2019, the sun shone gloriously over Manchester and spring was very much in the air. Spring Festival decorations were hung across Manchester city centre and China Town. With fireworks popping, dragon and lion dancers dancing and happiness flowing, the three-day Spring Festival celebration held by the Joint Council of Chinese Organisations Northwest reached its climax. Ten Greater Manchester dignitaries and nearly 100,000 citizens across the city joined the local Chinese population to celebrate the Spring Festival together. Consul General Zheng Xiyuan attend the celebration upon invitation and addressed the event. Deputy Consul General Fan Yingjie and Consul Lyu Xiaomei accompanied him. 

 
  

Consul General Zheng Xiyuan said in his speech that it was delightful to see the Manchester Spring Festival celebrations bear rich Chinese cultural elements including Chinese folklore display, performance and gourmet tastings. The Spring Festival has become an important festival that is joyfully embraced and celebrated by local people. The Manchester Spring Festival celebration is now among the largest celebrations in Europe since it was first held 27 years ago. 2019 is of great significance to both China and the UK with the approach of the celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the People's Republic of China and the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations at chargé d'affaires level between China and Britain. At a time when the world political and economic situations are facing many uncertainties, China and Britain are expected to move forward hand in hand, overcome difficulties together, carry out friendly cooperation and gain mutual benefit and win-win situations. The Consulate General in Manchester will take concrete steps to support development and construction of the Greater Manchester Region and work with local friends to create a brighter future together. On behalf of the Consulate General in Manchester, he sent his New Year's greetings to the vast overseas Chinese population, local Chinese enterprises, Chinese overseas students, Chinese tourists in the UK and local people, and wished for prosperity for the motherland and peace for its people. He also hoped that Sion-British relations would continue moving forward.  

Her Majesty's Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Lord Mayor of Manchester, Chair of Joint Council of Chinese Organisations Northwest and representatives from Chinese enterprises respectively gave their speeches and sent their best wishes for the Spring Festival to overseas Chinese people and local British people.

   
During the celebration, overseas Chinese organisations and local art groups performed programmes featuring Chinese characteristics, including drumming, martial arts, acrobatics, singing and dancing, and chanting. A grand fireworks party was held in Chinatown in the evening, and Manchester city centre was filled up with people, who were gathering to celebrate Chinese culture.
