On February 5, 2021, Consul General Zheng Xiyuan attended the online Chinese New Year celebration hosted by GMP(Greater Manchester Police), accompanied by Consul Lyu Xiaomei.
In his speech, Consul General Zheng commended GMP’s devotion to and care of the diverse communities it serves, making special note of the close cooperation between the Chinatown police team and local Chinese community. He thanked
the police for their efforts in eliminating racism and combating hate crimes during the pandemic.
Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts said the annual CNY event was meant to mark the contribution of the police officers of Chinese heritage and the contribution of the local Chinese community to the economic and social development of Greater
Manchester and the UK as a whole.
Baroness Beverly Hughes, Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester for policing, said that Chinese New Year is an important festival in Greater Manchester and the culture it represents had become an integral part of the diversified local society. In
response to the potential increase of racism during COVID-19, GMCA has worked closely with the Chinese community to ensure their concerns are addressed in policy making.
This is the fifth annual Chinese New Year celebration hosted by GMP, attended by Chinese associations and representatives of other ethnic groups.
